I WANT TO BAPTIZE MY CHILDThe sacrament of Baptism is the sacrament that begins the process of Christian Initiation, which means that it is the sacrament that makes a person a member of the Church. The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (263) states that:
'Baptism takes away original sin, all personal sins and all punishment due to sin. It makes the baptized person a participant in the divine life of the Trinity through sanctifying grace, the grace of justification which incorporates one into Christ and into his Church. It gives on a share in the priesthood of Jesus Christ and provides the basis for communion with all Christians. It bestows the theological virtues and the gifts of the Holy Spirit .A baptized person belongs forever to Christ. He is marked with the indelible seal of Christ'. A person can be baptized at St. Teresa's at any age. Babies and small children up to 5 years old If the person to be baptized is a baby or a child up through kindergarten age, the parents or legal guardians must come to the rectory to arrange for the baptism. The baby's birth certificate must also be brought. Parents must attend a baptismal preparation class, held on the second Tuesday of each month in English, at 7:30pm in the rectory. Godparents are encouraged to attend if possible. Remember: Godparents must be at least 16 years old, have completed both their first Communion and Confirmation and cannot be the parents of the child being baptized. At least one must be a Catholic but the other can be Christian Witness, that is, a practicing Christian of another denomination whose baptism the Catholic Church recognizes. |
I WANT TO MAKE MY FIRST COMMUNIONFirst Communion is the first time a Catholic receives the Eucharist. The Church teachers that:
"(The Eucharist) is the source and summit of all Christian life. In the Eucharist the sanctifying action of God in our regard and our worship of him reach their high point. It contains the whole spiritual good of the Church, Christ himself who is our Passover. Communion with divine life and the unity of the people of God are both expressed and effected by the Eucharist. Through the eucharistic celebration we are united already with the liturgy of heaven and we have a foretaste of eternal life." The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (274) Children receive their First Communion after they have reached the "age of reason" (7 years old).IF they have been part of the religious education program at St. Teresa's for at least two years they will make their communion at the normal time. If however they are older, they are enrolled in our RCIC program (See "I want to get baptized") and will receive their first Communion at the Easter Vigil with the adults. |
I WANT TO RECEIVE CONFIRMATION
According to the Church:
"The effect of Confirmation is a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit like that of Pentecost. This outpouring impresses on the soul an indelible character and produces a growth in the grace of Baptism. It roots the recipient more deeply in divine sonship, binds him more firmly to Christ and to the Church and reinvigorates the gifts of the Holy Spirit in his soul. It gives a special strength to witness to the Christian faith." The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (268) Children receive the sacrament of Confirmation after a two-year preparatory program in our religious education program, and are normally confirmed at the end of their 8th grade in school. Older children are also welcome to receive Confirmation, though they participate in a (The "RCIC" the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children) for children preparing to receive their sacraments. These children would then normally be confirmed after the completion of their studies with the adults at the Easter Vigil. |
